The winners of the ECO Prize for Southern Lower Saxony have been announced!

On March 7, 2024, the ECO Prize Southern Lower Saxony was awarded for the first time. Five teams and their sustainable projects were honored at the award ceremony at the PFH Private University of Applied Sciences Göttingen.

1st place Environment: ParabolKraftwerk (Kevin Flottmann, Michael Krcmar, Matti Möller, Mathias Schulze, Noah Schulze)

With the “parabolic power plant”, the five pupils from year 12 at BBS Holzminden I won with their upcycling of discarded satellite dishes. In class, they developed an innovative prototype of a parabolic power plant to generate energy at home and are “tinkering” with the expansion of the system and other uses.

1st place Social: HandicAPP (Mila and Max Dorka)

Siblings Mila and Max Dorka from Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium Bad Harzburg are in the process of developing the “HandicAPP”, a pioneering app designed to make it easier for people with disabilities to book concert and event tickets for themselves and a companion. The siblings came up with the idea because fourteen-year-old Max is in a wheelchair himself and knows the problems from his own experience.

2nd place Social: Food truck (Alfeld student cooperative)

The 28 students from the one-year vocational school for business and the entry-level vocational school for home economics/catering would like to purchase and expand a food truck to prepare healthy meals as part of their lessons and sell them at external events.

Special prize “Young commitment”: Streuobstkids (blattgold nature school)

One of the special environmental prizes went to the “Streuobstkids” from Eichsfeld. The 14 children aged between 7 and 12 cultivate a meadow orchard under the guidance of nature educator Michaela Nolte, promoting biodiversity, self-efficacy and manual skills.

Special prize “Sustainable networks”: Roswitha Gymnasium Bad Gandersheim school garden

The school garden project at Roswitha-Gymnasium in Bad Gandersheim also received a special environmental award for its particularly strong local networking activities.

In the run-up to the award ceremony, the final teams presented their projects to guests and participants at a colorful market of opportunities. Over snacks and drinks, those present were able to marvel at the prototype of the parabolic power plant and a selection of the last apple harvest from the Streuobstkids, give feedback on the HandicAPP and get to know the many projects of the school garden. The award ceremony in the auditorium of the PFH Private University of Applied Sciences Göttingen was rounded off with musical performances by a duo from the Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium Göttingen and a keynote speech by the Mayor of Göttingen, Onyeka Oshionwu.
